Multicultural Day!!

I love cultural day at our school! However, I am so glad it is only once a year! It is probably the most stressful day with preparations, scheduling, chaos, and of course...parents! It is a day that each classroom gets to showcase what they have been learning throughout the year about their country of study. The sixth grade country of study is Spain. Our art teacher, Mrs. Swinney (the best teacher in the world, who is also the 6th grade Spanish teacher/keeper of all things cultural for 6th grade), did such an awesome job in the millions of things she did for our class. My class presented posters they made about the different regions of Spain, artwork of Spain, poems they wrote inspired by Don Quixote, and their wonderful gazpacho soup.

While half of the class is presenting their hard work, the other half is out learning about the other countries around the building. Each student gets a passport and a journal. When students visit other grade levels and countries they get a stamp in their passport and they collect information from other students in their journals. Also in their journals, there is a place to copy the flag and facts.


As with a true cultural day, there must be food! Since our six Spanish teachers are from Spain, the food samples on cultural day are authentic and delicious. My class made gazpacho soup (which I pureed the night before much to the dismay of Jason because it was so hard to get rid of the onion smell). But every classroom had very good food. Our kids were a little cautious to taste much of it, but I was surprised how well they did. Once they tasted most things, they went back for seconds :)


To culminate our cultural day each grade level puts on a performance for parents and family. With the guidance of Mrs. Swinney, my class performed their much loved Spanish Rap "Mambo." Some of you may remember it (click here to hear)


Finally, I have to say that the class looked very good in their read shirts and black pants! They really came together and did a nice job the whole day!
